Well the new Jerwood Gallery in Hastings is a wonderful venue. its situation in the old fishing village is superb and has been built sympathetically to complement the net shops it nestles between. there is a gallery with jerwood winners and short listed artists, there is a well chosen permanent gallery showing mid and late twentieth century painting as well as twenty first century srtists. there is a gallery which shows temporary exhibitions and the introductory exhibition is a vibrant show of work by RoseWylie including an interesting video of a conversation with her. There is a good cafe/restaurant and a small book shop in the reception area. the young people manning the desk and stewarding are charming and very helpful, including hotal information for my next visit!
The Hastings Arts Forum is a members organisation with two galleries on the seafront in St Leonards. an interesting organisation which i would certainly join if i lived locally. Debbie’s and Mary’s work sit very well together resulting in a cohesive exhibition with several pieces sold by the time i visited
Hastings Museum had a recommended exhibition but i just ran out of time . There is certainly a lot going on in Hastings, including a series of sat night open air concerts beside the Jerwood, amd a really good bus service to negotiate the very long seafront. now if i would only win the lottery i could buy a bolt hole for more weekends away ….
