Courses at Eastleigh College

The new brochure is imminent but I thought I would give you an advanced peek at the part-time courses I will be involved in teaching during the next academic year, starting in September/October at the Desborough site

City and Guilds Patchwork and Quilting level 2 and/or level 3

City and Guilds Creative Sketchbooks level 2

Certificate in Art & Design (Building an Art, Design and Media Portfolio) level 3

HNC/HND in Contemporary Art Practice level 4 and 5

City and Guilds Patchwork level 2 and/or level 3 which will be on Tuesday  afternoons from 13.15 until 16.45, the level 2 runs for one year and the level 3 runs for 4/5 terms.       The Level 2 course covers Patchwork techniques, Applique techniques and Quilting techniques. There is an introduction to design and this will result in two assessed pieces of work, one predominantly patchwork and one predominantly applique. Finally there will be some printing and dyeing. The Level 3 course is a progression from the level2 and involves experimentation with different fabrics and extended techniques while still keeping within a patchwork and quilting framework. There will be more design with assessed pieces in 3 dimensions and a final quilt. Finally, colouring on fabric knowledge will be extended

City and Guilds Creative Sketchbooks level 2 which will be on Tuesday evenings from 18.00 until 21.00, running for one year. This course covers a variety of printmaking and collage techniques, with a little observational drawing. The first term will teach techniques, then the second term students will create a sketchbook to own theme into a bought sketchbook, and the third term students will create a second sketchbook to a second theme and constructed to their own design

Certificate in Art & Design (Building an Art, Design and Media Portfolio) level 3 which will be on Monday and Tuesday evenings, 18.00-21.00. Students will initially be introduced to a range of techniques and processes within specialist areas of Art, Design and Media, through a range of assignments and workshop style sessions. Students will undertake workshops in: drawing; painting; print making; sculpture; photography; illustration; graphic design; textiles; fashion; animation and film. Assessment is by production of a portfolio work and assignments. Students will not be required to sit an formal exams and the course is practical research based. During the Monday evening sessions, students will have the benefit of contact with a personal tutor, who will be able to oversee their development and be on hand to advise them on a weekly basis. The Tuesday evening sessions will be delivered through a number of short assignment workshops, led by a range of different Art, Design and Media specialist practitioners. The course will be delivered through these workshops and assignment based work which is led by the student and directed and guided by the tutors who will work with students on an individual basis.

HNC/HND in Contemporary Art Practice level 4 and 5

This is a broad based course where students will undertake workshops in: drawing; painting; print making; sculpture; photography; illustration; graphic design; textiles; fashion; animation and film.

If you were hoping to study the FdA Stitched Textiles, which no longer runs, this is now the course I would recommend. While exactly the same level as the FdA, it is broader in scope, you are still able to specialise in Stitched textiles, but this course offers much much more.

You will have the opportunity to produce work using a variety of methods and approaches and will be introduced to these through a range of themes and visual art problems using workshops, short projects, research tasks, critiques and presentations. This will help you to then develop your work independently, through a series of assignment based projects. That with support and guidance form tutors will enable you to focus on your specialist area of interest within visual art practice in the second year of the course, culminating in a final exhibition.

OOPS!

It is of course the SELECT Festival! sorry to have got the name wrong, i am obviously living in the past and thinking of a previous event… We have now received the actual citation for our award…

Studio21 is the winner of the prestigious Hartlebury Award 2016 presented annually during the Select Festival

The person who was judging said that he thought our work was innovative and inspiring, we were very welcoming and that the work pushed the boundaries of textile art.

And the official statement reads

‘The Sewing Machine Project’ showed an eclectic mix of work from wrapped up deconstructed sewing machines, fascinating insights into the piece work machinists, to beautifully machined fabrics. The pictures of men milling the sewing machine and the women at work using them provided a historic background to the work, together with the professionally produced and informative booklet. It was an inspiring and professionally presented exhibition’

We’re now entitled to display the logo in all our communications. How fantastic is that!

All the stitching is finished, just got the leaflets and statements to update and print, battens to cut and drill …. clothes are washed , packing started

Here are a few images to whet your appetite… can’t show the whole pieces because they wouldn’t be new to the exhibitions I have this year.

The first pic is of a group of five titled ‘Not Invisible’, it is said that when we get grey haired and over 60 we become invisible ….. not in my world we don’t! These will be shown as part of the Room6  exhibition titled ‘6 Shades of Grey’ so please do pop in and say hello to whoever is stewarding that day

The second pic shows a group of five again this time titled ‘Men at Work’ and the third pic is titled ‘The Building of New York’ and is drawn from the iconic photograph of workmen sitting on a  girder high up above the New York skyline. this one is a monster, over 10feet wide. These pieces will be shown in the People and Places gallery, where Kim Thittichai and I will be showing our new work and demonstrating too. Please pop by and say hello

Harrogate Here I Come!

Golly, we are hurtling towards the end of November and that means just one thing… the Knitting and Stitching show is moving on to Harrogate ….. I just love this show, they are all subtly different and this is one of my favourites… Here I am working on the Artist in Action stand in 2010 for Art Van Go.. Note the change of hair!

07I will be back there this year on the Artist in Action stand for Art Van Go on Friday Sat and Sun morning, so please pop over and say Hi if you are going to be there. Friday morning will see a double act with Kim Thittichai and I working on the same bench… we have a two man show coming up at the ICHF show at the NEC, B’Ham in March 2016, so this will be our first get together to start some planning and get some work done. Then I will work solo for the rest of Friday, all day Saturday and Sunday morning.

I will be working with procion dye … some drawing, some monoprinting, and anything else that comes to mind while I am working … I plan to decorate my washing line around the whole of my area!

Rum’s Eg Exhibition

Phew, a very successful Open Studios is finished, and all the bunting is packed away until next year

No time to rest on my laurels though ….. tomorrow I will be setting up my two man show called ‘Stitched – A Point of Departure’  with Hilary Marshall at the Rum’s Eg gallery in Romsey…will post some pics when it’s done. The exhibition opens on Tuesday and is there until the end of October!

Another exhibition is linked to this one called ‘Stitched’ this is Hilary and I together with 23 Graduates of the Foundation Degree in Stitched Textiles that I ran at Eastleigh College… the brief was to fill Romsey Abbey with stitch! Partly to celebrate St. Ethelfleeda’s festival, it will be there for the whole of October… exciting times …. I am making a fairly major installation although it is not finished yet I am quite excited about it …. there have been some hiccups along the way … not least of which my friend Andy made some frames before I had finished the panels and yes… you guessed it, they shrank during the dyeing and stitching processes… First lesson of dyeing and stitching is to measure after the work is done!!! Hey Ho ….

Will post a flyer when Rum’s Eg send one to me …. watch this space
